Kobe Youngest To 17,000 Points

by Angelo on November 19th, 2006

Kobe Bryant became part of league history again by becoming the youngest ever to reach 17,000 points and the funny part is he did it against the Raptors. Yes, the same team (while now greatly overhauled) that made Bryant the second best scorer in a single game with 81 points last season. While you know I don’t really like Kobe, I find this piece of news totally hilarious. As a consolation, It’s not as embarrassing for the Raptors as the 81 point record last year since Kobe only scored 31 points this time.

Bryant hit a 16-foot jumper from the right baseline off a pass from rookie Jordan Farmar for his 17,001st point. About a minute later, he scored on a driving layup that extended the Lakers’ lead.

The crowd cheered, but didn’t appear to be aware of the milestone and there was no special announcement.

Kobe has been making records and his talent and his good head start as a young player really makes him a great player in this league. There’s no doubt about it. As an older player, he’s starting to show greater signs of leadership and an understanding of the team concept by involving his team more than ever. I guess it’s just his old “selfish” self - the one that was a ball hog who wanted to be MJ in his rookie year. It’s this that gives Kobe that love-hate relationship with the rest of the world. By that I mean that you really love him or you really hate him. There really isn’t a middle ground. That’s what makes Kobe such a icon in popular culture.

Hurry Lebron…there is a record to break! And to think Lebron should be able to do it even if he passes the ball a lot of the time!

No he’s not. Better check how you word what you’re trying to say. You must mean youngest not first. Saying he’s the first is an insult to the greats like oscar robertson, kareem, jordan, karl malone and all those other guys who all have way more than 17k points in their resume.

Well, Kareem Abdul Jabbar has roughly 38,000 points, so Kobe only has to make 21,000 more. He can reach that by doing what he does best: hogging the ball, not passing to anyone, and shooting anytime he can. And to hell if the Lakers lose, because the point record is at stake, right?
