Billups Opts Out Of Contract

by Angelo on June 26th, 2007

Detroit Pistons star point guard Chauncey Billups has officially opted out of his contract and will be a free agent come July 1. This is exactly the event that gave rise to those rumors way back about Billups going elsewhere. But Pistons fans shouldn’t worry too much since he has made it clear to his agent Andy Miller that Detroit wants to stay as much of possible.

“Chauncey’s first intention is to come back to Detroit, and we’ll continue to explore that as an option, but if we’re unable to make a deal with the Pistons my obligation is to look at other possibilities that will provide long-term security for Chauncey and his family,”

I’m sure this move is really more to get a good contract situation for better and long term security. I’ve read many times from various sources that GM Joe Dumars won’t make the same mistake they did with Ben Wallace when they let him walk off to the Chicago Bulls last off-season. But if indeed for some reason Billups does not go back, then the team’s failure to reach the NBA Finals this season will indeed be the start of their fall from dominance. Dumars has a lot of decision to do this off-season that could affect the way the future of the franchise will go: what to do with Webber? What to do with the other older guys? What to do with the young guys like Jason Maxiell? But resigning Billups is definitely at the top of their list.

If another team offers a max contract then Billups is gone. Joe D will not give Billups a max contract. He is too old.
