Survivor: Game 5 Theme For Mavs and Raptors
When faced with a life threatening situation, it’s amazing how one could “will” himself to survive even with conditions that should have killed him. I’ve been watching the program “I Shouldn’t Be Alive” in Discovery Channel and the game 5 wins by the Raptors and the Mavericks reminded me of the situations in those episodes of the show. Game 5 was win or go home for both teams who faced elimination with a 1-3 deficit. It was just survival mode out there and they came out alive.
Dallas Mavericks - Golden State Warriors
The Mavericks are not out of the hole yet but at least the 118-112 win over the Warriors gave them some hope as the end did not come in Game 5. But honestly I’m not surprised. While their performance in this series has given me doubts about their worthiness to be called champions, I believed the Mavs could at least win this game 5. If they didn’t that would have totally put the nail on the coffin as far as my belief in the team’s capabilities are. The mark of being champ worthy to me is being to overcome any obstacle no matter how difficult. Poor match ups isn’t an excuse for poor performance. What made Jordan’s Bulls a great team in its own right is the fact they faced amazingly powerful teams, teams that very well championship caliber. Jordan’s Bulls had to face these teams in more often that not, nail biting series’ that could really have gone either way. But then the Bulls rose to the occasion to win.
The Mavericks don’t seem to have that kind of quality as they struggle badly in only the first round. But at least the Mavs showed that it’s not yet over and there’s still some fight left. What I like about this win is that it shows that if the Mavs will lose the series, at least now they’re doing it fighting. Dirk rose to the occasion to play like the MVP candidate he is, carrying the team past a season ending threat. Of course, there’s still another game to survive and the odds are still against them. the Mavericks will have to mimic their efforts in game 5 to even have a chance to stay in the ball game.
Toronto Raptors - New Jersey Nets
What I want to say about this game 5 98-96 win by the Raptors, I’ve pretty much said above in the Mavs-Warriors write up. The one thing I could add for this series is fact that Raptors proved in this game that their first win wasn’t a fluke and that it could be done again. I said that the Nets just have the edge i this series because of their experience in the playoffs. But this win shows that Raptors have the talent to make an impact in the post season and armed with the experience from this series this yea, they will really be a force to contend with next time around. I’m not so sure the Raptors will get this lucky in the next game. They only won by two points after all. Look for the Nets to get up after this fall and close out the series in the nest game.
I’d like to laud Jose Calderon for his career performance in this game 5 win. He was the hero and he really deserves the praise.
