Suns Ink Marcus Banks

The Phoenix Suns found a more than decent back up point guard to help Steve Nash in Marcus Banks who was a free agent from the Minnesota Timberwolves. They signed him to a 5 year deal worth $21M.

Banks was a bit of a disappointment earlier in his career when he played with the Boston Celtics. In fact he was almost traded to the LA Lakers together with Chris Mihm for Gary Payton and Rick Fox a few years ago. The Celtics decided to move Jumaine Jones instead. It was only really when he moved to the Minnesota Timberwolves that he seemed to find his game. Now he’s a very decent point guard with explosive offensive ability.

If Bnaks can reproduce his perfromance with the t’wolves, then the Suns have a formidable point guard with them. Whatt happens to Leandro Barbosa though? I see Banks as the type of player that can do what Barbosa can do. I even have this impression that Barbosa is better. I assume Banks will be a core piece in the Suns’ future or why else give him a long term deal? I predict that that the Suns will find that Barbosa is the better backup to Nash and that the Suns will probably end up stuck with or shopping a point guard with a long term contract in a few years.
