Last year’s Most Improved Player of the Year Boris Diaw finally gets what he deserves in a contract extension. The extension involves $45 million over 5 years. The Suns really want him around long and so does Boris.

“I knew that the Phoenix Suns wanted me to stay for four more years and I knew that I wanted to stay four more years,” Diaw said at a news conference after practice. “I think there was no way we that we couldn’t come to an agreement. I was so ready to stay here.

Boris Diaw came in last season as paty of the trade that sent Joe Johnson to the Arlanta Hawks. With the Hawks, Diaw didn’t really do much and in fact was simply the team’s backup shooting guard. He was quite a disappointment. But with the Suns, he got a new opportunity to prove himslef and he did not disappoint. With Aamre Stoudemire out practically the whole season, the 6-9 Frenchman Diaw stepped in to replace him at center.

Diaw was a big part of the Suns’ success last season, helping the team reach the conference finals against the Mavericks even without Amare. It is thought that with Amare back this season they just might go on to win it all. Amare is back but it seems like he’s not yet back to his old self, only producing a mere fraction of his usual stats. Will Boris Diaw have to step up his game once again? If the answer is yes, the Suns should be happy Diaw is here to stay for a long time.
