Spurs Face Elimination, Lose Game 4

My prediction at the start of the season was that the San Antonio Spurs will face off with the Detroit Pistons in the NBA Finals just like last season. I figured both were pretty much evenly matched since Detroit is as dominant as ever and the Spurs are the same old Champion Spurs but with more great help from Michael Finley and Nick Van Exel. Now Detroit is facing problems with Cleveland who evened out the series by winning games 3 and 4. But Detroit still has some life in them and they can get out of this mess. The Spurs on the other hand dug themselves into a hole by losing game 4 in OT 123-118, facing elimination with the series currently at 3-1 in the Mavs’ favor.

Jason Terry and Devin Harris have become the explosive unstoppable tandem to give the Mavs a boost to star Dirk Nowitzki. Ever since Harris joined Terry in the starting lineup forming a 2 point guard punch, the Mavs have won 3 straight.

To think this was the series I expected would be as exciting as the Washington-Cleveland or the Phoenix-L.A Lakers matchups in the first round. The idea of two equally matched teams going head to head would ideally mean a 7 game nail biting series. It’s not yet over and the Spurs may dig themselves out of this but with the way the Mavs are playing now, it seems the chances are low. The Mavs have three chances to hold of the Spurs but they only need one to eliminate them. The odds are against the Spurs now!

The Mavs have proven to be a formidable opponent and I’m happy for their success. But to see the Spurs go down the way they might, winning just one game in the series, just seems like a loss not fitting for a reigning championship team.

As a Spurs fan, this has been a tough series to watch. Particularly the last two games. The officiating has been horrible. Both the Spurs and the Mavs had some really bad calls go against them last night. Both teams are playing excellent basketball, but, the refs keep getting in the way with terrible calls. Let the players decide the outcome! It’s a shame that such a great series is being tainted in this way.

Yeah the officiating has been bad all over the league. I actually somewhat agree with Mark Cuban and his suggestion to make officiating better. =) I hated it when the league offices slapped him with a fine for publishing that in his blog. The guy has a point!

Try to visualize a finals best of seven between the Cavs and the Mavs! Really great huh? That will confound all the experts and the couch wannabe experts. This year’s run up to the finals has been anything but a sure thing, with only Miami surviving a bruising series of encounters. The way things are going, I would be afraid to even predict who will make it to the finals. (I was one of those who looked forward to a Pistons - Spurs rematch!)
