Spain Brings Home The Gold
Being a Filipino, Spanish culture is close to my heart. This is why I’m happy that team Spain won the gold medal in the FIBA World Championships and without star Pau Gasol playing in the championship game too. While deep inside I feel that team USA’s defeat to the Greeks was a good humbling experience for them, I felt strongly confident that Spain would still be a potent enough force to win againt the Greeks even without Gasol. The new Toronto Raptor Jorge Garbajosa was the hero in this game, scoring 20 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Spanish guard Juan Carlos Navarro added his own 20 points. Spain did an excellent job defensively, holding explosive Greek star Vassilis Spanoulis to just 4 points.
Congratulations team Spain!

I thought Spain would lose it, given the Gasol injury…and the habit of Spain blowing the big games in both football and basketball. But they deserve this victory, and I was hoping against hope they would make it. As one with some Spanish-Portuguese blood, it was easy to identify with this cinderella team. Poor Team USA. Back to the drawing boards. Back to learning all about team play.

That Raptor is Jorge Garbajosa, the Spaniard who led team Spain to victory in the FIBA World Championships against Greece even when Pau Gasol went down with an injury, winning the prized Gold medal. Garbajosa was one of the new free agent signings made by the Toronto Raptors this offseason - a really shrewd move by GM Bryan Colangelo. [...]
