Sir Charles A GM?

by Angelo on September 12th, 2006

After Charles Barkley was enshrined to the Basketball Hall Of Fame a few days ago, he has expressed his wish to be an NBA team’s General Manager. Since he also wished to run for Governor of Alabama in the future, it’s probably good to have an NBA GM position on his resume so that he can say he’s had some management experience. But the question is, if he does become a GM will he be a good one?

Jerry West is probably the best player turned NBA GM ever but Joe Dumars’ work with the Detroit Pistons is pretty good too. Both West and Dumars were good players in their day and turned out to be good GM’s too. But just as being a good player doesn’t always translate to being a good coach, the same is true for GM’s.

Barkley is a great guy. He’s charismatic and he’s honest… too honest! He’s not afraid to say things to your face because that’s what he honestly thinks. Now that’s great for the world of entertainment but it might not be too good for the GM position. The thing about Charles is that he doesn’t hold back. He doesn’t make things subtle and that can translate into a kind of wrecklessness a GM should not have. While being a risk taker is one thing a GM needs once in a while, I think Barkley’s attitude will translate into him going overboard with the risk taking and not enough with taking cautionary measures. It’s the kind of thing Isiah did with his Knicks, getting talent that came with so much risk, bad contracts. In fact I see Charles as the Isiah in the Knicks type of GM - a good eye for talent but sucks with handling risk.

Having said that, maybe Charles should run for governor either. If he can’t handle the risk of managing a pro basketball team, I certainly doubt he’d be able to handle the tasks of being governor. Charles is a great and entertaining guy and that’s why I think he should just stay in entertainment.
