Seattle Sonics and Storm Sold

It finally happened! Reports were spreading that Starbucks owner Howard Schultz wanted to sell the Sonics because he could no longer afford to maintain it. During draft day when the Sonics selected Saer Sene, the commentators were criticising the selection because the Sonics already had 2 previous project center selections. the selection just didn’t make sense from a basketball point of view until someone brought up the fact that he’s someone they can leave abroad for a few years and by the time they bring him over they would be under new managedment. The Starbucks guys wouldn’t have to pay him… the new owners would.
So the Sonics were sold to an Oklahoma based group led by Claton Bennett. the sale also included the WNBA Seattle team, the Seattle Storm. Hopefully this new ownership will give the Sonics franchise a new spirit to turn themselves around and bring them back the winning spirit that was there before.
The only problem I see about this new ownership is that they’re outsiders. They’ll have a harder time connecting with the city and the fans. There is also that danger that they might relocate the franchise to Oklahoma sometime in the future. Right now the Hornets are there and the Sonics are in Seattle to stay at least until 2010. Beyond that we’re not certain as to the future of the Sonics’ home.

Well, maybe not but so far the Sonics was bought, part of the Bobcats was bought and the majority share of the Grizzlies was bought too. The Blazers almost got bought too until owner Paul Allen decided to keep the team. [...]
