Poll: Would Billy Donovan Make a Good NBA Head Coach?

by Angelo on April 9th, 2007

Coach Billy Donovan coached the Florida Gators to two straight NCAA titles, making him the most talked about college coach around. There are rumors going around that some NBA teams are considering him and the question is would he make a good NBA coach? We’ve seen a lot of respectable college coaches fail at the NBA level and that’s because the NBA and college basketball are very different. Not only are the rules different but also the way you deal with the players is different. the most recent of such case is Mike Montgomery who coached Stanford in college and the Golden State Warriors. His X and O knowledge was said to be solid but he couldn’t lead his players like the way Don Nelson is doing for them now.

Personally I think Donovan could have a good chance to be a successful NBA coach but he has to go through the process. If he’s hired as a head coach straight from the college level like Montgomery did, he’ll just see the same fate. He’ll need to work his way up and spend some time as an assistant to learn the NBA ways. This way he has time to adjust instead of going straight into the fire. Unfortunately this process takes pretty long and might still end in disaster. So personally I think he could do it but it might just not be worth his time. If ever he goes to the NBA and goes to a team that will lose year after year, he’ll probably be thinking he could be building another championship caliber team back in Florida. What do you think?

Do you think Gators coach Billy Donovan would make a good NBA head coach someday?
