Okur, Allen Added To West All Star Roster
The total for injured Western Conference All Stars is now four with Yao Ming and Carlos Boozer announced earlier and now Steve Nash and even Allen Iverson. Carmelo and Josh Howard were added to the roster as injury replacements by David Stern a few days ago and now Ray Allen of the Sonics and Mehmet Okur of the Jazz. To show you how deep the West is with stars, those four are legitimate stars and there are even more out there who could have been named to the roster given more slots like Elton Brand for example.
Something I heard Sir Charles say a few weeks ago shines light on why Okur was selected. He said that the teams doing well in the season should be rewarded by selecting more stars. When Detroit had a heck good record last season, they were rewarded with 4 of the 5 starters playing in the All Star Game. This year the Jazz is one of the good teams in the West and Boozer and Okur are important parts of that success. With Boozer out, someone had to represent the team and Okur was a good choice for that job (but I think Deron Williams could have been a great selection too).
With Nash and Iverson out pf the roster, that leaves on the Spurs’ Tony Parker as the team’s only true point guard as the starters don’t have a true point guard either so Kobe or T-Mac will have to play the point at the starting squad (don’t really who will do it).
