Mavs, Eddie Jones Agree To Two Year Deal

by Angelo on August 4th, 2007

Veteran guard Eddie Jones is one guy who’s had a a nice successful career but has yet to include a championship in his basketball resume. He’s been with the LA Lakers of Kobe and Shaq and the Miami Heat of Dwayne Wade and Shaq but never when they won their championships. The Dallas Mavericks agreed to a two year $4 million deal with the veteran guard. This could be his last chance to win a title before he retires.

At 35 years old he’s still a very reliable veteran who can still score and defend well because he’s still in good shape. He can also be a good mentor to the young guys the Mavericks have in the roster like Maurice Ager. The addition of Jones makes the Mavericks an even deeper team as he joins quality reserves Jerry Stackhouse and Devean George on the bench.

The Mavericks have the talent to win the championship. Now all they need is the heart, the desire and the mental toughness to stay in games to finish out the many series they play in the playoffs. What happened to them against Miami in the 2006 Finals what happened against the Golden State Warriors in the first round of the 2007 playoffs - those are signs that the Mavs were not mentally tough. They learn to do that and they can win a title easily. Hopefully Jones can use his veteran wisdom to help.

As for the Heat, they lost a guy who could help them win more games. He may have been just another old guy with them but he’s still in great shape. I’m sure they’ll feel his absence when the season starts.
