Lottery Love For Raptors

by Angelo on May 24th, 2006

The spirits of the ping pong balls have spoken and they said “Bryan Colangelo, your Raptors will get the number one pick!” Well, not really but the point is that the Raptors won the Draft Lottery and will pick first in this year’s draft. It’s amazing since the Raptors only had the fifth best chance in the league to win the lottery.

The Raptors made some disappointing drafts in the past few years like drafting Michael Bradley in 2001 with the 17th pick and Rafael Araujo in 2004 with the 8th pick. Last year’s pick, Charlie Villanueva, was thought to have been drafted too high at number 7. Thankfully Charlie proved he was worth it.

With Bryan Colangelo at the helm, Toronto fans should feel more at ease on draft day. His experience in Phoenix should prove useful in bringing out the best out of this great situation. Personally, I think the Raptors need a center and a point guard, especially if Mike James decides to leave for Houston like he hopes. Toronto might want to draft Texas big man LaMarcus Aldridge at number 1 who people compare to Jermaine O’Neal and Channing Frye. Afterall it’s harder to find a quality big man than it is a point guard.

I feel quite sorry for the Portland Trailblazers for getting the 4th pick since they had the best chance to win the lottery.
