Fratello Canned, Barone Sr. Takes Over
It’s finally been done. Grizzlies coach Mike Fratello became the first coach to get fired this season - something I think shouldn’t have been done. Yet, with the Grizzlies sporting the worst record in the league, somebody’s got to take the blame.
“We just felt it was time to make a change and move in a different direction based on our record and future goals. We wish Mike the best in his future endeavors,” West said in a statement.
The Grizzlies started the season without their star Pau Gasol, explaining their poor record. imagine the Cavaliers without Lebron or the Celtics without Pierce. that’s the reason for their struggles. All this isn’t Fratello’s fault but somebody’s got to take the blame. If you look at it closely, Fratello actually did a good job with the young Grizzlies without their star and without many of the veterans too. I’m looking forward to the Grizzlies bouncing back when Gasol gets back.
I wish Tony Barone Sr. good luck in his new position as head coach of the Grizzlies but I still wish Fratello wasn’t fired.
This will be Barone’s first head coaching stint, serving the past seven seasons as director of player personnel with the Grizzlies. He also spent two seasons as an assistant coach with the Grizzlies under former head coach Hubie Brown (2002-2004). Barone takes over a Grizzlies team with a 6-24 record.
“We are excited to have a person of this caliber serve as our interim head coach,” said West. “Tony is not only familiar with our veteran players, but also with our young players having been an integral part of their scouting and drafting process. We give Tony our full support and know the remainder of the season will be productive under his guidance.”
