Boston Steamroller soon to meet Pistons
NBA Obsessed takes you into the hit and run game of NBA Basketball.
Paul Pierce is no stiff when he plays
26 - 3 start for the team in the Green Jerseys led by the 3 Big Beans in Bean Town. The Boston 3 Party is starting a revolution.
Their latest victim was the Lakers; a team that somehow wins with the One. His name is Nemo or wait, that was the Matrix. His name is Kobe, yeah, Kobe Bryant.
Boston joins the Detroit Pistons has the teams to beat in the Eastern Conference and those two teams meet again soon, but more about that later. First it is time to look at these Celtics and figure out why it is working so well.
First there were questions about Rajon Rondo leading the team at point guard. Sure, Chauncey Billups taught him a few lessons, but Rajon is young and will learn quickly. The boy has skills.
Then there was some questions about the surrounding cast put together so hastily.
Danny Ainge, Boston’s futile lord, had surrounded his three gladiators with qualified (James Posey, Tony Allen, Kendrick Perkins, Eddie House, Glenn Davis, Veal Scalabrine) prime-time role players. source
Ok, so there are still questions. Danny is getting a lot of mileage out of those players right now.
There is some out there not being true Doc Rivers fans. He certainly could get coach of the year based on the body of work by this team. Still doubts linger.
Or those dubious Doc Rivers could coach a team out of a paper playoff round or teach three superstars how to dance in unison on defense (that’s where assistant Tom Thibodeau comes in) and accept not leading all the time on offense.
Paul Pierce
The biggest enigma going in was Paul Pierce. Just how would he react to not being the center of attention, to not getting as many shots, to having to play defense?
Let’s count the ways Pierce was supposed to mutilate Boston’s Big Three, declares column contributor Irwin Sirotta, who advocates the leprechaun (team log) be equipped with a lit cigar.
He will not be compatible with players as good or better than him.
Wrong!
He must almost be the man and will refuse to pass in many situations.
Wrong!
He cannot or will not sweat on defense.
Wrong!
He’s not a positive team leader.
Wrong!
Oh, don’t get me wrong the anti Paul group is still strong. It is a long season and tasting all this success can make things a lot more palatable in the beginning, but things can happen and often due in the grinding days ahead. Paul will be tested as never before.
Pistons at home
Let’s get back to the Celtics and Pistons match up. The Pistons started out ok with lots of games out West on the road. Since then they have ramped up and been on fire. They gave Boston their only loss at home in a two point Chauncey Billups free throws win.
Boston will look to return that favor in Detroit.
Grab an ‘08 calendar and mark down this Saturday night - Celtics at Pistons. Detroit, for those only with green goggles, owns a nine-game win streak thanks to yesterday’s Motown 114-69 matinee mauling of Milwaukee.
Detroit has allowed triple figures just once in the run, and that was in the waning seconds of garbage time last Friday night against the Pacers.
Boston and Detroit are the only teams allowing less than 90 ppg (86.8 and 88.3 ppg, respectively).
So set the DVR for Saturday and sit back and enjoy the rematch. It does not really matter who wins that game, although your intrepid author is a huge Pistons fan and would like to see them win.
Both of these teams are still trying to figure out a lot of things in how their teams work with both teams trying to mesh a lot of new players. Boston complementing the Big Three and Detroit trying to blend in some youth.
Boston vs. Detroit on Saturday night in Motown. Look for a shoot em up!
