Billups A Buck Next Season?

by Angelo on November 4th, 2006

With TJ Ford traded to the Raptors for Charlie Villanueva, the Milwaukee Bucks may just make a run for a point guard next season. In fact there was news going around that they were hoping to lure Bulls guard Kirk Hinrich but then he signed an extension just before the deadline. It’s still too early to say for sure since the season just started but it looks like they might have their guy come offseason.

When this season ends, Billups has a player option worth $6.8 million for 2007-08. He could opt out. According to a close friend of Billups, the veteran point guard has interest in Milwaukee. And the interest might be mutual when the time is right. Source

A guy like Billups could be a great asset to the Bucks especially since he’s such a hard worker and a great floor leader. Imagine the scoring punch of a Billups-Redd backcourt! With Bogut and Villanueva up front, Redd and Billups need not worry about launching an outside jumper when the time calls for it. The Bucks are a good young team that hasn’t gone past the first round of the playoffs in quite a while. Billups may just be that leader they need!

I pity the Pistons if they lose Billups, since they already lost Ben. He’s such a valuable player to them that I think the Pistons will go downhill quite quickly if they lose him. Rasheed is not getting any younger and Rip and Tayshaun won’t be able to manage on their own.

Angelo, be serious, you think Joe Dumars would just sit around and do nothing if Billups left? They may not even want him. He is getting long in the tooth for a point guard and will command big bucks.
They did not lose big Ben. David Stern decided to go with Offense and changed all the rules. Joe D brought in good buddy flip saunders and he went with offense. Big Ben was upset most of last year. Detroit was not going to pay much to hold onto Big Ben.
Stern may be making a mistake, unless you enjoy seeing Duane Wade or LeBron James march to the free throw line. But these things go in cycles.

James, it was clear Joe D wanted Ben back but after turning down the insulting initial offer, owner Bill Davidson just told him to take a hike. Without the centerpiece of their defense look where the Pistons are now.

The fact is, Chauncey is the offensive heart of that team. With Ben gone they’ll have to make up with more offense and if Billups goes the Pistons are screwed. Where can you find a point guard in the league that can bring the same kind of talent and intangibles Billups brings to the table? Guys like him are hard to find. If he leaves, they’ll probably only be able to get a less talented but cheaper guy like replacing Ben with Mohammed. Rasheed isn’t getting any younger and Billups wasn’t 2004 finals MVP for nothing!

Joe D is the strenth of the team, along with John Hammond, not Big Ben or Rasheed or Chauncy Billups.

Ben and Rasheed were the reason for the title.

Joe D. would like to get more speed at the point.

[…] Chauncey Billups is focusing on trying to win another championship for the Pistons but that definitely doesn’t stop him from thinking about him free agency during the off-season. While I’m sure Joe Dumars will try his best to keep his star point guard in Motown, Billups wants to keep his options open and the Memphis Grizzlies could be a possible destination for him next season (another could be the Bucks?).
