A New Flip in Motown

I was hoping Ronald “Flip” Murray would stay with the Cavs. He did an excellent job filling in for Larry Hughes when he was injured, just like he did an great job filling in for Ray Allen with the Seattle Supersonics a few years back. Flip is all about instant offense and that’s why the Detroit Pistons wanted him. Flip Murray agreed to a 2 year contract with the Pistons worth $3.6M. Coach Flip Saunders won’t be the only Flip there now. =p
The loss of Murray won’t be felt that bad with the Cavaliers though. They a bit loaded with players can play the shotting guard position (but some are can play small forward) such as Sasha Pavlovic, Larry Hughes, Ira Newble, Luke Jackson and Rookie Shannon Brown. In fact the Cavs seem to be very pleased with Shannon Brown’s performance thus far in the Summer League that we can be pretty sure he’ll get major minutes come the regular season. Heck he might even have a chance to start. So maybe it’s in the best interest of both parties that Murray left. It’s just a funny thought that the Pistons got a member of Cavaliers, the team that gave them a lot of trouble in the playoffs to the point that they almost got eliminated. And Murray was one of the reasons for that.

I think Flip is a big factor for the Cavs. Hughes hasn’t been that effective and I know Flip way back since he was still a Sonic. He is a scoring threat if given the chance.

Have rooted for the Pistons for a long time. Another Flip is difficult to think about. You go from having a great D and winning the NBA to having no D and losing to Miami. David Stern wants a lot of O and no D. Joe D. is just trying to keep up by signing an offensive coach and player both named Flip. Defensive stops are a thing of the past for these Pistons.

I guess when you lose the heart of your defense to the Bulls, stuff like that happens. This move by the Pistons is a bit strange. With guys Billups, Hamilton, Hunter, Delk to name a few I don’t think the pistons REALLY needed another offensive player in the backcourt unless some of those guys are free agents and aren’t coming back.

Chauncey and Rip are the starting 1 and 2. Delk is off the bench offense at the 2 and did not respond in the playoffs. he can score, though. Hunter is backup at the point. Flip gives them a more legitimate backup 2. Delk is a free agent.
But if Flip Saunders allows Rasheed to sit outside and pop 3’s, then no one will be posting up. This is a problem. Nazr is not the answer.
